Natural Treats to Clean Dog Teeth

Friday, October 1, 2010

Anyone who know me knows that my dogs are spoiled. They're mainly indoor dogs who sleep on the couch (and my bed when my husband isn't looking), and they pretty much get what they want. I want them to live for a long time, so I feed them natural food and give them dog dental chews to keep their teeth clean. Bad teeth don't just cause bad breath, but they can lead to additional health problems. I don't want my dogs to have to go through any unnecessary surgery to have their teeth cleaned, so I try to avoid that by giving them Nylabone treats that reduce tartar.

Nylabone Nubz are made from real chicken, and they're gluten free. Dogs can have food sensitivities, and gluten can irritate dogs' stomachs that same way it does people's stomachs. If you're a Costco shopper, you can use the coupon in the monthly book to get a bag of these treats for $3.50 from August 19th – September 12th. These treats are highly digestible, which makes me feel good about giving them to my dogs, because they've been known to swallow food without chewing, and I worry about things getting stuck in their stomach.

Larger dog treats can be broken to make smaller treats if you don't want them to have the entire treat at one time. Animals depend on us to take care of them, and I want to do the best I can to help my dogs have a good life. Every time I see that commercial with the animals in the shelter and you hear "In the Arms of the Angels" by Sarah McLachlan, it makes me want to take all of those animals home with me. I know I can't do that, because I already have two dogs, so it wouldn't be good for me or the dogs, but I can do everything possible to make sure that my own dogs are well taken care of. For me, this starts with the little things like keeping their teeth clean and healthy.
